Q: Is “advisor toxicity” really that much of a problem?

Phil Cannella: No question about it. Just read the headlines. And nowadays, the last thing you need is an unscrupulous financial advisor. With the twists and turns of today’s economy, a retiree needs an advocate, not a con artist.

Q: So what should people look out for?

Phil Cannella: Several red flags come to mind. First avoid stockbrokers who claim to have a “secret method” that yields good returns even in bear markets. Listen with your head, not your wallet.

Q: I like that line.

Phil Cannella: Also avoid advisors who use overly complex language or ask you to “just trust” them because their investing strategies are “over your head.” The less you understand their plans, the more they control your money. And don’t assume that just because an advisor is part of your social circle, he’s honest; many of Madoff’s clients came to him by referral.

Q: I didn’t know that.

Phil Cannella: It’s true, though, and it’s unfortunate. That happens all the time. Click the “broker check” tab on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority website (www.finra.org). You’ll see if the advisor has complaints against him. In that same vein, do not write checks in the name of your advisor. Always write checks directly to the brokerage house.

Q: Anything else?

Phil Cannella: Finally, do not accept financial statements on the advisor’s stationary. Only accept stationary directly from the custodian, bank, or actual brokerage house. There are other, more technical things I could list, but these are the main ones, and they should get you started in safeguarding your nest egg. I’ve been doing this for 37 years, and it’s tragic how many advisors there are out there who see your money as their retirement plan.

Q: Why do you say that retirement funds aren’t just about money?

Phil Cannella: It’s simple, and it’s true: The decades you have worked are moments of your time that you have sacrificed for your retirement accounts. They should be deeply personal to you and your family. Retirement money is moments of your life!

Q: I’ll never look at my bank statement the same way again!

Phil Cannella: And you shouldn’t! Realize that the numbers on your bank statements—your asset values—are moments of your life that you have surrendered. You’re still a young man, but for older Americans, discovering how to preserve their assets will consequently enable them to preserve the value of those sacrificed moments, and that spells security for themselves, their spouse, their family and even their heirs. They can create a financial legacy, built out of stockpiled moments, that they pass on as part of a fruitful, lasting cycle for generations.

Q: Wow. That’s such a different way of expressing it.

Phil Cannella: If you’re a retiree, look at it this way: After enduring a hectic drive through downtown traffic, you’ve made it to the wide expanses of the retirement superhighway. But you need to ensure that you’re traveling with a safe and well-functioning vehicle, equipped with a qualified retirement advisor at the wheel, one who knows the pitfalls and the retirement advantaged laws that will get you to where you want to go. Phil Cannella: Thank you. I often counsel terminally ill seniors to give them hope and also to give me fulfillment. I tell them a story about when astronauts travel to space. As you know, they wear temporary protective space suits so they can survive the atmospheric changes. Well, while you’re here on Earth during your lifetime, God has given you—the essence of you or your spirit—a temporary protective suit at birth, or an Earth Suit called your body. Your Earth Suit ages and changes with the years, wears and tears, and eventually breaks down. But your spirit and energy are dynamic, enduring possessions that you have been blessed with at birth that will never age and don’t die along with your body.

Q: Interesting. Go on.

Phil Cannella: So you see, it’s logical to realize that your Earth Suit is sick or terminally ill, not your spirit. Just like the leaves will fall from the trees to signal the new spring cycle is on the horizon; so will the body fall from the spirit. This is a sure signal that a new spring cycle is on the horizon for you, too. No matter what age you are physically, you probably feel younger spiritually, that is to say, you don’t feel your physical age. Your ageless spirit is your legacy that gets passed on, long after your body is gone, into a new phase of the cycle. It’s just the uncertainty of not knowing what is after death that troubles us. To see the face and the eyes of a terminally ill person light up with hope after understanding the logic of the cycle of life is nothing short of a priceless blessing for me. There is not a better feeling in this life then to give someone hope, whether it be spiritual or financial.

Q: That almost sounds like something a motivational speaker might say.

Phil Cannella: And you’re right. I certainly do hope that this story gives some light and hope for aging readers—and maybe a new way of looking at things. It has served me and my family well. And with all the cycles we experience in life, why would our economy be any different? Throughout history our economy has had its ups and downs and ups again, time and time again. The stock markets themselves inhabit just another cycle. The periodic market crashes we live through certainly attest to life’s shifting nature and the uncertainty that we inevitably face.

Q: I can see definitely the relationship between the two.
